I read water level reports in vain; I envision the Danube since my early childhood as something inconceivably deep. As deep as the ocean. The two banks, the traversing, the drifting, the. flood, the cleansing, the pollution, the connection, the bridges, the wondering, the thirst, the mystery, the maelstrom, the mouth of river, the energy, the Blue Danube Waltz, the shooting down into the Danube, the Black Forest, the Iron Gate, the fish, the boating, the King being crowned on the ice and that dead cat all belong to my subject matter. That dead cat which was being carried off by the river when I glanced down by chance yesterday. (J.Sz.)
